班加罗尔系印度南部卡纳塔克邦的首府和交通枢纽，也是全国重要工业，科学和文化中心。市区人口248.3万，包括郊区在内295万。它位于卡纳塔克高原东南海拔921米的丘陵脊顶上，气候终年凉爽宜人，最热月(5月)平均气温270C,最冷月(12月)210C，年降水量924毫米。原为迈索尔土邦主的城堡（始建于1537年），因气候宜人和地处半岛南部的中心位置，1831年英国侵占后逐渐发展为居住中心和交通枢纽。第二次世界大战期间为英国重要军事基地，设有部队医院，补给站，空军训练学校等军事机构。50年代后现代工业发展迅速，飞机制造，电话器材和机床制造等均占全国重要地位。电器设备，药品，纺织，陶瓷及农副产品加工等工业也较发达。班加罗尔是印度南部公路枢纽和多条铁路交会点，城东印度斯坦航空港有班机通孟买，马德拉斯和斯里兰卡首都科伦坡等城市。市中心在老城区，建筑密集，为商业区和行政机构所在地。城北，城南是现代建筑的住宅区，规划有序，街道宽阔，间有众多公园绿地，有印度 “花园城市”之称。主要工业区在东郊以及城市北和西南边缘的交通沿线，西郊是铁路枢纽。市内多科学文化机构，著名的有班加罗尔大学，农业科学大学，航空学院，印度科学研究所，国家航空实验室和迈索尔政府博物馆等。这里的道路宽阔，市内布满18世纪以后所建的建筑物，使它成为印南的重要旅游地区之一。
